STATEMENT: Brampton Board of Trade Calls for Immediate, Proportionate Business Supports in Response to New Restrictions

On January 3rd the Government of Ontario introduced public health restrictions to curb the spread of the Omicron variant. The Brampton Board of Trade agrees that the health of our economy is directly linked to the health of our community, and we have always worked to support both – including through proposing a Responsible Business Protocol as a safe alternative to earlier lockdowns and by facilitating on-site employer vaccination clinics.

That said, our organization is profoundly concerned about the sudden, sweeping nature of today’s measures and their certain impact on not only businesses’ bottom lines, but the ability of many to stay afloat through another round of reduced or closed operations.

We are calling on all levels of government to immediately and clearly communicate direct supports that will be made available to affected businesses, and to ensure that those supports are proportionate to the harm that these closures will inflict.

While the onus is firmly on government to provide immediate supports, it is important that we all be familiar with the new measures that will be in place effective Wednesday, January 5th. The full list of all restrictions can be found by clicking here.
