The Brampton Board of Trade was pleased to host Degrees, Diplomas & Development earlier this week. We convened leaders from the post-secondary sector and industry partners to explore the work that our local educational institutions are doing to prepare the talent of today and tomorrow, and how it aligns with the current and expected needs of the workforce in areas spanning advanced manufacturing, healthcare, logistics and more.
It was encouraging to hear about alignment that already exists and the commitment of all stakeholders to strengthen it. Specific strategies around offering microcredentials to give qualified candidates some of the soft skills needed to perform in-demand roles were discussed at length. Two high-power panels, one focusing on representatives from post-secondary education in Brampton and the other focusing on local employers, engaged directly on their respective vantage points and shared what information they need from each other to deepen their partnerships.
Special thanks to our morning keynote, Mike Jackson of Deloitte Canada, who spoke about the future of work and used a data-rich presentation to highlight the biggest forces shaping the workforce right now. He shared with attendees that employees seek increasing flexibility, and when seeking work look first at the organization (prospective employer) and second at the specific role. He also spoke of new jobs that did not exist as recently as six months ago, such as AI prompt writer.
The event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, Algoma University & Humber College at the platinum level, Toronto Metropolitan University at the gold level, and Almag Alumnimum, The City of Brampton, TD Bank and Sheridan College at the silver levels.
