On February 19th, the Brampton Board of Trade hosted interviews with local candidates running in the provincial election. We’re calling it “Brampton Votes”.
These interviews reflect our commitment to civic engagement—an essential pillar of a strong and functioning democracy. Our goals are simple:
- Ensure candidates understand the issues that matter most to Brampton voters.
- Ensure voters know where candidates stand on key issues.
Every member of the legislature, whether in government or opposition, has the power to shape policy and influence decisions. That’s why we want you to feel confident in choosing the candidate who best represents your interests—and Brampton’s.
A Different Format This Time Around
Traditionally, we’ve hosted debates during elections. This time, however, we took a different approach. Given the unexpected timing of the election, securing participation from all candidates proved challenging. Rather than forgo the opportunity to engage with them, we opted for one-on-one interviews.
Each interview, approximately 20 minutes long, allowed for deeper and more meaningful discussions. Candidates shared an opening statement, responded to questions from our moderator and a panel of community leaders, and concluded with a closing statement. The panels were moderated by Vijai Kumar Singh, Manager of Policy and Government Relations at the Brampton Board of Trade.
Strengthening Civic Engagement
Despite the unique circumstances of this election, these conversations remain vital in fostering civic awareness and ensuring and informing the electorate. We remain committed to engaging candidates in future elections, including the upcoming federal election, reinforcing our dedication to working with all elected officials—regardless of party affiliation. We encourage all candidates to participate in debates in future.
