The Brampton Board of Trade Santa Claus Parade lights up downtown Brampton on Saturday, November 19, 2011. The parade is the largest single day event in Peel Region and is Canada’s grandest nighttime parade.

Celebrating the 26th anniversary of the consecutive running of the Parade, we are excited that WestJet will be joining our parade bringing their giant mascot “Wes”, a 13 foot high inflatable Jet. “Wes” will be one of the highlights of this year’s parade, amongst the 10 bands, 40 floats and over 200 costume characters that entertain the over 100,000 spectators every year.

Last year inflatables were introduced for the first time and in keeping with the organizing committee’s mandate to constantly improve the Parade, this year the inflatables will be illuminated with a state of the art lighting system. A truly brilliant addition to the parade’s theme of “T’was the Lights before Christmas”.

The Brampton Board of Trade Santa Claus Parade Committee is very pleased to welcome the Kiwanis Club of Brampton to our family of major sponsors joining the Rotary Club of Brampton, the Brampton Downtown Development Corporation and 407 ETR.

Brampton gets blood megacentre

Editor’s note- BBOT Governing Council member Keith Medenblik passed this story along from the Hamilton Spectator, so it has a Hamilton perspective.

Hamilton will not be home to the new Canadian Blood Services megacentre, slated to open in January.

Brampton was chosen to house the new operations centre, an $83 million investment, that will have production and distribution centres in Toronto, London and Hamilton consolidated into one.

“The one advantage of that site is that it is near three major highways: 407, 401 and 427, and it’s also near Pearson International Airport,” said Angela Smith, a spokesperson for Canadian Blood Services.

The 145,000 square foot megacentre will process an average of 1,470 units of blood a day and an average of 1,626 blood components will be delivered from the site daily.

Smith said the site will serve about 100 hospitals in southern and central Ontario 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“It gave us access to a variety of transportation methods and if one highway is closed down, we have another route to the various hospitals,” Smith said.

Canadian Blood Services is a national blood system. If someone in another province needs a specific type of blood or blood product, it can be flown out. Blood products can also be flown into Toronto and distributed from the Brampton site when needed.

The Toronto facility will be the first to move into the new centre in January. The Hamilton production and distribution facility located on Main Street East, near Victoria Avenue South, will follow over March/April 2012. The blood donor clinic located on Stone Church Road in Ancaster will remain.

“It has nothing to do with where you donate blood, it’s where the blood goes after you donate it,” Smith said.

More than 340 employee positions at the new blood centre were offered to existing staff at the Hamilton, London and Toronto locations. In Hamilton, 64 staff members chose to stay with the organization and 62 chose to take a severance package.

Baseball hero Joe Carter is the keynote speaker at The Brampton Board of Trade’s Annual General luncheon meeting on October 27 at IL Cavaliere Banquet Hall, 4316 Ebenezer Road Brampton, ON L6P 0R9.

In recent weeks, our CEO Steve Sheils had the pleasure of meeting Joe and learning about his personal commitment towards the charities close to his heart. Through this new friendship, Mr. Carter offered to meet with Brampton Board Members to share his views and experiences of “empowering business off the field”. Mr. Carter’s post Blue Jays career reflects his game-changing approach to creating successful business relationships.

Registration is 11:00, Lunch and keynote speech at noon and the AGM starts at 1:30. Tickets are $65 for members, table of eight $520 and $100 for potential members. Joe Carter needs no introduction to Toronto baseball fans. Carter is most famous for hitting a walk-off home run to win the 1993 World Series for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Carter first reached the majors in 1983 with the Chicago Cubs, but was then traded to the Cleveland Indians, where he blossomed into a star. Carter emerged as a prolific power hitter, hitting as many as 35 home runs in a season and regularly driving in 100 or more runs. After a strong 1989 season, Carter was traded by Cleveland to the San Diego Padres for prospects Sandy Alomar, Jr., Carlos Baerga, and Chris James. The Padres subsequently dealt him to the Toronto Blue Jays along with Roberto Alomar in exchange for star players Fred McGriff and Tony Fernández.

In 1991, as he helped the Toronto Blue Jays win the division title and hit the game-winning single that clinched the AL East Championship; he also emerged for the first time as a team leader. In 1992, he helped the Jays win their first World Series championship, the first ever won by a Canadian-based team.

In 1993, the Blue Jays reached the World Series again, facing the Philadelphia Phillies. In Game 6, with the Blue Jays leading three games to two, Carter came to bat with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Blue Jays trailing 6–5 and Rickey Henderson and Paul Molitor on base. On a 2–2 count, Carter hit a three-run walk-off home run off Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams (against whom he was 0–4 career) to win the World Series, only the second time a Series has ended with a home run.

Tom Cheek, radio broadcaster for the Blue Jays at the time, then went on to say “Touch ‘em all, Joe! You’ll never hit a bigger home run in your life!”

Carter was named to five All-Star teams. In his career he hit 396 home runs and drove in 1445 runs. He drove in 100 runs in a season ten times, including the 1994 year, which was cut short due to the strike that happened about 144 games into the year.

He left baseball for the broadcast booth in 1999. He has been inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Joe Carter Classic Golf Tournament has raised more than $225,000 for the Children’s Aid Foundation.  During the Foundation’s 12th Annual Recognition Night, September 15th 2011 in Toronto Joe Carter was the recipient of a special Guardian Award for his outstanding commitment and contribution to the Foundation and children in need across Canada.

Six elected to BBOT Governing Council

The Brampton Board of Trade has elected six new members to serve on its Governing Council effective July 1.

VP Policy Jim Schembri has been re- elected and named President Elect by Governing Council. His one-year term as President will begin January 1, after a new Governance model is presented to members at the Annual General Meeting in October.

Six were elected including Keith Medenblik, Hank Peelle, Paul Robin, Schembri, Jaipaul Massey Singh and Simon Walker. The nominating committee of the Board including the President, Past President and CEO declared the election final.

“This is the beginning of a new era for The Board of Trade,” says President Stephen Rhodes, who will serve an additional six months to ferry through the changes that need to go before the full membership this fall.

Rhodes says the Board is in the midst of a review of its strategic direction, governance and consultation on member expectations.

“We believe the organization needs to be better focused around how we connect members for business growth and development. We want to ensure that staff and volunteers are involved in the process of developing our long-term direction.”

A new strategic plan, an overhaul of the bylaws and a new governance model will reset the organization for growth,  Rhodes said.

“There is some heavy lifting to do before we meet members this fall. We want to ensure that we have all of our ducks lined up.”

The BBOT has also hired Steve Sheils as Interim CEO on a 12-month contract, as it begins a search for new CEO to replace Gary Collins.

“Steve was already working with us in a consulting role and has quickly grasped what we are trying to accomplish. He has significant management experience and we expect to tap that expertise during an interim time while we search for a new CEO. “

Governing Council also approved an interim executive, which will also serve until the New Year. Charles Waud is Past President, Jim Schembri is President Elect and VP Policy. Susan Crawford is VP Membership. Glenn Williams is Treasurer. Jaipaul Massey Singh will serve as Director of Diversity and Tom Allain as Director of Value Services.

Returning Directors include Terry McIntyre and Denise Jones. Jeff Zabudsky has been appointed to the Board.
